During his short life (1833-1866), Jules Demersseman was known in Paris as "The Paganini of the Flute." When you listen to this work, you will understand why his contemporaries bestowed this nickname upon him. He was undoubtedly the foremost flutist of his time. But, just like Paganini, he was also a remarkable composer. His Concerto italien is a masterpiece of 19th. C. virtuoso music. Up until now, this work was available only in a transcription for flute and piano, known as the Sixieme Grand Solo de Concert. This new orchestration by Mark Starr, for flute and opera-sized orchestra, now makes the piece playable by soloists in concerts with orchestra. The score and orchestral parts are available on a rental basis for public performances and recordings, from Noteworthy Musical Editions (noteworthy@zasu.us). For inquiries about rental fees, performance fees and recording licenses, call 650-948-2060.
