Composed in 1862 when Liszt learned of the ultimate impossibility of his marriage to Princess Carolyne the two transcriptions from Mozart's Requiem of "Confutatis maledictis" and "Lacrymosa" hint at contrition mixed with hope mixed with acceptance. In the wake of the events which prevented the marriage, Liszt would turn to God and these transcriptions stand at the outset of a deeply spiritual journey for the composer.
