Composed by Nicholas Palmer. Exile; Covenant; Petition. Octavo. Published by World Library Publications (WL.008801).

Nick Palmer reveals his artistic imagination in his rendering of Psalm 137, "By the Rivers of Babylon." Gently flowing keyboard triplets support the serene melody, creating a constant buoyancy in the words of the psalmist. The mood develops as the text recalls the demands of the Babylonians to "sing for us the songs of Zion." The answer comes back as a plaintive reply that floats above whole-note chords, allowing the response to be heard as a mournful cry to God to vindicate the people. The triplet pattern returns; the men sing the melody this time and are gracefully accompanied by three-part women's voices. This evocative piece will be treasured by singers, accompanists, directors, and listeners alike.
