Pjotr Iljitch Tchaikovsky is not only famous for his poignant symphonies and virtuoso concertos, but is also extremely popular thanks to his splendid romantic ballet music. The Nutcracker Ballet was inspired by a fairy tale called "The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice" by the German poet E.T.A. Hoffmann. As a Christmas gift, the little girl Mary receives a wooden nutcracker that looks like a strange little man. Mary's brother soon damages the nutcracker, which is patched up and put to bed next to Mary's doll. During the night, the nutcracker changes into a fair prince, who takes Mary to a castle where the Sugar Plum Fairy orders the Sylphs to perform a series of varied dances. When Mary wakes up, she realises it was only a dream. You can hear successively: Miniature Overture - Characteristic Dance - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy - Russian Dance (Trepak) - Arabian Dance - Dance of the scullery maids - Waltz of the Flowers.
