One of several orchestral miniatures composed by Charles Gounod during the 1870s. It gained popularity in the United States in the 1960s as the theme music for a television series produced by Alfred Hitchcock. The piece is a musical depiction of a scene in which a marionette takes a tragic and fatal fall and a funeral procession then follows.
