Published by Dorothy van Joolen Barth (A0.784994).The Princess is an English Country Dance tune that made its appearance in the 11th edition of Playford's Dancing Master, which was published in 1701. It has a light, lilting, and romantic quality. I've kept the original key of g minor but have taken liberty with octaves and occasional modification of the melody. I've also written a second part in an interesting contrapuntal style. The Princess can be played on two violins, going up to 3rd position in the second violin part, which takes the final iteration of the B theme. Since the lowest notes of the violin are not used, The Princess can also be played on other combinations of C instruments: two flutes, flute/violin, recorder/violin, etc. I've included essential slurs, but in actual performance I hook or slur more notes than indicated. These are individual choices, to be worked out according to artistic preference or with a teacher. The Princess makes a beautiful and unique wedding processional, whether for the bride, bridesmaids, or mothers. It can also be used as wedding Prelude music. The Princess will be enjoyed by the student seeking an enchanting recital piece that is not out of reach for the young violinist.
