Commissioned by the Augustana (IL) College Jazz Ensemble, Online is a miniature suite in four movements: Introduction: Log-on, (I) The Information Hi-way, (II) Cyberspace, (III) Chat-Rooms, and (IV) E-mail Special. Various aspects of free improvisation are utilized in the first three movements. E-mail Special is a modified blues that can be opended up to feature any soloist in the band. Technical problems and range difficulties have been avoided in the interest of focusing on conceptual (improvisational) developement. An effective programmatic piece, Online provides a welcome addition to the literature for the school jazz ensemble. Grade 4.
