(Misspelling of "apassionato" is as in score. Have attempted to correct some more consequential possible errors, though I have not had access to Rosenhain's manuscript to be more sure.) (I would like to thank User Matesic for his assistance, error-catching and encouragement though any errors are emphatically my own.)

Navigation etc.

At least three quartets - no. 1 op. 55, no. 2 op. 57, no. 3 op. 65, also published in 1865 by Richault, see below (BNF gives a date of 1865- may refer to the 4 November 1865 etc., note below.)

1884 pub. of Breitkopf edition from Hofmeister Monatsbericht, which identifies it as no.3 in D minor.

All 3 quartets were published in 1864 by Richault. Publication noted in the Bibliographie de la France  2e série, 53e année, nº 48, 26 Novembre 1864, p.562, registration 2854. (All 3 mentioned again- same or different printing?, 4 November 1865, p.505. Or may be the difference between score and parts?)

Some Rosenhain works (at least one; the opus 73 concerto; possibly others) are strongly suspected to have been composed much earlier than their publication date, and as usual the same may be true here absent evidence to the contrary.

Becker, dedicatee, may have been the violinist of the quartet which premiered the quartet?
