"Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows. " A simple accompaniment of quarter-note chords lies under the plaintive yet lyrical melody, which grows and develops throughout the first section. The melody and the accompaniment become increasingly more complex and aggressive until reaching a dissonant, fortissimo climax, when random ringing with chimes delicately accompanies a return of the melody. Appropriate during Lent or whenever this scripture passage is used. RCL, Year B, Proper 24.
