Jacques Chailley was born on the 24 March 1910, into a music family, he was a student of Gustave Cohen at the Sarbonne, of Henri Busser at the Conservatoire and was a private pupil of Nadia Boulanger and Claude Delvincourt. He trained as a conductor with Pierre Monteux and Willem Mengelberg and studied Musicology with A. Pirro, Yv. Rokseth and A. Smijers. He was Secretary-General and the Assistant Director of the Conservatoire. 1937. , professor of ensemble singing at the Sorbonne and Director of the institute of Musicology at the University of Paris. 1952. A. Ph. D. , he held numerous positions of responsibility until his retirement in 1979. Since then, he has concentrated on composing.
