Hans Gal was born in the small village of Brunn am Gebirge. just outside of Vienna. He studied at the New Vienna Conservatory, where he later taught for some time. In 1929, with the support of Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwaengler, and others, he attained the directorship of the Mainz Conservatory. Gal composed in nearly every genre, and his operas were particualrly popular in the 1920s. With the onset of World War II, however, Gal was forced to leave Germany and eventually emigrated to Britain, teaching at Edinburgh University for many years. Hans Gal died on October 3rd, 1987.
