One of the greatest works in the chamber repertoire, Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" quartet was written shortly after the composer learned he was dying, in March 1824. It received a performance by amateur violinists and Schubert on viola in 1826, and was published in 1831, three years after Schubert's death. Reprinted from C. F. Peters edition.
