Give the king thy judgments, O God. William Knapp. A capella. Sagrado, Anthem. Idioma. Inglés. SATB.

Original

This anthem was first published on pages 166-171 of the second edition of William Knapp's A Sett of New Psalm-Tunes and Anthems , London, 1741, where it is described as 'An Anthem Ps. 72 for a King or Queen's Accession to the Crown'. The Book of Common Prayer includes forms of prayer for the anniversary of the accession of the reigning monarch. At the time of the first publication of this anthem, this would have been observed on 11 June. as George II had succeeded to the crown on 11 June 1727. By a proclamation dated 8 October 1751, the date of the service was changed to 22 June thereafter to provide consistency with the newly-adopted Gregorian calendar. The date of the service subsequently changed to reflect the anniversaries of the accessions of later monarchs.
